Three area youngsters got the opportunity of a lifetime when they performed alongside Broadway star Ali Ewoldt in New York City.

Reiley Lonergan, 17, of Minersville, Emily Hart, 10, of Buck Run and Ella Frantz, 9, of West West Terrace were all members of the “Spotlight Kidz” group that sang at the Laurie Beechman Theater on 42nd Street in New York City.

Guest Broadway performer was Ali Ewoldt who is the new “Christine” in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Ewoldt also was in the Tony Award winning show THE KING & I, was “Cossette” in the first revival of LES MISERABLES on Broadway. In addition, she played the lead role of “Maria” in the national tour of WEST SIDE STORY.
Under the direction of Sandy Kost-Sterner, the trio was part of a group of 24 “Spotlight Kidz” members that performed in New York City. The highlight of the show was when all the “Spotlight Kidz” joined the Broadway star Ewoldt on stage to sing “Somewhere”¬- a signature song from WEST SIDE STORY.
Accompanying Ewoldt and the “Spotlight Kidz” in New York City was Bruce Marianelli of West West Terrace who is the groups Musical Director.
In addition to group performances, all three were selected to sing a solo. Lonergan- who will be a senior at Minersville Area High School- sang “Right-Hand Man” from the show SOMETHING ROTTEN. Hart- who is going into fifth grade at Minersville Elementary- sang “Naughty” from the show MATILDA. Frantz- who will be a fourth grader at Assumption BVM School- sang “Broadway Baby” from FOLLIES.
This is the third straight year that the “Spotlight Kidz” have had the opportunity to sing on a New York City stage. Last year, the group performed with Pottsville native Bradley Dean who has been in nine Broadway shows. The year prior, the Broadway guest was Marissa Perry who had the lead “Tracy Turnblad” in HAIRSPRAY.

The “Spotlight Kidz” is part of the Pottsville Gymnastics & Theatrical Center, Inc. which is owned by Barbara Kost-Lonergan. It is like an All-Star group of the most talented singers and performers in the area.
