Pictured above is the Abandoned Old Route 61, in Centralia, PA.

It has been over 53 years since the biggest mine fire in the world was started.  There are currently only a few people living in the borough of Centralia.

This part of Route 61 was closed in the early 1990’s.

PennDOT dumped this section of Route 61 with an improved part of Byrnesville Road. After the construction, the new and improved road took the name Route 61, and the old section of the road was left to the natural elements.

The mine fire that already destroyed the once bustling and busy borough of  Centralia, is moving very slowly toward the town of Ashland.
